About
Welcome to Plugged In: A Women-Centered Science Fiction Book Club. In this semi-regular podcast series we’ll explore subgenres, tropes, history, and current trends of science fiction written by women. Our goal is to demystify the science fiction genre as something that is only about space invaders or robots, and to dispel the notion that it is not a genre for women. We personally find the science fiction genre to be a space for radically progressive ideas, and are excited to discuss these ideas with you and our guests on the show. Plugged In was created in 2025 by Lauren Shoemaker out of her passion for the science fiction genre. Lauren’s love for the genre was borne out of her undergraduate education at Florida State University where she studied English Literature. In her specialized coursework, she studied the genre and its many subgenres from both the literary and philosophical perspectives. This podcast is for sci-fi readers, those who are new to the genre, and those who have never read sci-fi in their life!
